Independent Panel Report on the Examination in Public of the Review of Additional Pitch Requirements for Gypsies and Travellers in the South West
The Panel report following the Examination in Public of the Single Issue Review of the Regional Spatial Strategy for the South West in respect of Additional Pitch Requirements for Gypsies and Travellers, was published on 2 June 2008 by Government Office South West.
The report contains recommendations about what changes the Panel think should be made to the distribution of Gypsy and Traveller pitches in the South West. Their recommendations have been made in response to the many representations that were sent to the Panel on the review and the discussions which took place at the Examination in Public.

Now the independent Panel's report has been published - what happens next?
The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Hazel Blears, published the Proposed Changes to South West’s long term plan (the Draft Regional Spatial Strategy) on 22 July 2008, which marks the start of a 12 week consultation. After considering any further views received as a result of this consultation, the final Regional Spatial Strategy will be published, if possible, before the end of 2008.

Examination in Public - 4 to 6 March 2008
The Regional Assembly, as Planning Body, is working with Local Authorities across the region to identify the additional pitch provision required for Gypsies and Travellers.
The Examination in Public (EiP) into the provision of additional pitches for Gypsies and Travellers in the South West took place on 4 to 6 March 2008 in Exeter.
An Independent Panel and invited participants tested the soundness of the proposed policy for additional pitch requirements to 2011. The EiP also provided an opportunity to have a structured discussion on issues arising from the proposed policy.

Benchmarking Review of Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessments in the South West
The Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (University of Birmingham) and the Salford Housing and Urban Studies Unit (University of Salford) have been commissioned by the South West Regional Assembly to benchmark Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessments (GTAAs) produced by seven groups of Authorities in the South West.
The aim of the review is to assess the robustness and consistency of the GTAAs as evidence towards the RSS Review of additional pitch requirements for Gypsies and Travellers in the South West.
