Regional Strategic Review on Migrant Workers in the South West (2008)
Economic migration offers significant benefits to the South West. Migrant workers are vital to the performance of certain sectors, helping to fill labour and skills shortages and making a significant contribution to the economic prosperity of the region. However, economic migration also brings with it significant challenges. In areas where migration has caused the population to rise rapidly, new challenges have arisen in the provision of public services and the generation of community cohesion.
During this Review the Scrutiny Panel explored the role and influence of migrant workers within the economy of South West England, and the role of regional organisations in responding to this. The Panel sought to inform the development of a migrant worker action plan for the South West, raise the profile of the issues and encourage a more coordinated response across a wide range of relevant partners. The Terms of Reference for the Review can be downloaded by following the link below.
Between October 2008 and February 2009 the Panel undertook an extensive evidence gathering process, which will include face-to-face discussions with stakeholders, and a Regional Workshop which brought together partners from across the region. In February 2009, the Scrutiny Panel Members met with South West RDA Board Members and senior officers to debate the key issues.
A final report and recommendations was published in April 2009 and can be downloaded by following the link below. The Review revealed that there is much to be gained from working collectively on migrant worker issues. The Panel are keen to encourage partners across the region to sign up to the South West 'Migrant Worker Action Plan', and make the most of the contribution that migrant workers can make to our economy, culture and society.
The South West RDA will shortly publish a formal response to the Report which will set out how the Panel’s recommendations are to be addressed. The RDA’s response will be available on this page when it has been published.
The implementation of the recommendations will be monitored by the South West Regional Assembly. A follow-up meeting to discuss progress will be arranged after one year, and as relevant policy or strategic developments occur.
