Consultation on the Draft RSS

Writing with a penThe Draft RSS was submitted to Government by the Assembly in April 2006. It was open for public consultation from 6 June 2006 to 30 August 2006.

The consultation was run on behalf of an independent Panel of Inspectors appointed by Government. Further details on the Panel and consultation are given on their website at www.southwesteip.co.uk.

Following the consultation the Secretary of State decided that an Examination in Public (EiP) should be held to discuss and test the Draft RSS.

The EiP was held before an Independent Panel appointed by the Secretary of State and took place from 17 April 2007 until 6 July 2007. All consultation responses were taken into account and were used to help determine the matters to be discussed at the EiP and the participants who were invited.

It was the responsibility of the Panel to identify a list of matters and invite participants to attend the EiP. In general, the choice of participants flowed from the matters selected for examination. There was no automatic right to appear at the EiP.

The independent Panel prepared their report following the EiP, which was be sent to Hazel Blears, the Secretary of State for Communities, and is available by clicking here.

The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Hazel Blears, published the Proposed Changes to South West’s long term plan on 22 July 2008, which marked the start of a 12 week consultation, which Government Office for the South West ran until 24 October 2008.

The Secretary of State’s Proposed Changes to the Draft RSS take account of the Examination in Public Panel's recommendations along with representations made about the Draft RSS and other relevant evidence.

After considering any further views received as a result of the consultation on the Secretary of State's Proposed Changes, the final Regional Spatial Strategy will be published in the Summer 2009.
